About

Nepal’s gynaecologic oncologist —
with a rare focus on fertility.

Dr. Suresh Kayastha is Nepal's most comprehensively trained gynaecologic oncologist. He holds an MS in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Institute of Medicine — Nepal's foremost OBG training programme — followed by a Fellowship in Gynaecologic Oncology from AGOI (the Association of Gynecologic Oncologists of India), India's premier dedicated fellowship for gynaecological cancer surgery. He then completed advanced laparoscopy training in Germany through the GNESOG programme — one of the first Nepali gynaecologists to do so.

At Kathmandu Cancer Center (KCC), he manages the full spectrum of female reproductive cancers — cervical, ovarian, uterine, endometrial, vaginal, and vulvar. His approach combines technical expertise with a genuinely patient-centred perspective. For younger women, the question of whether cancer treatment will affect the ability to have children is often as important as the cancer itself. Dr. Kayastha's specialist interest in oncofertility — preserving reproductive options during and after cancer treatment — means this conversation always happens, and real options are explored.

He is part of the KCC HIPEC team, performing cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy for advanced ovarian and peritoneal cancers. He has presented his research at national and international conferences and won awards for scientific contribution to gynaecological cancer surgery in Nepal.

Oncofertility — Nepal’s specialist for young women with cancer A cervical or ovarian cancer diagnosis does not automatically mean the end of fertility. For carefully selected patients, fertility-sparing approaches — radical trachelectomy (preserving the uterus), conservative ovarian surgery, and egg-preservation coordination — can allow future pregnancy without compromising oncological safety. Dr. Kayastha discusses these options explicitly with every eligible young patient. This conversation is standard of care at KCC.

Surgical capabilities
🌼

Oncofertility & Fertility-Sparing Surgery

Radical trachelectomy for early cervical cancer (uterus preserved, future pregnancy possible). Conservative staging surgery for early ovarian cancer. Pre-treatment egg and embryo preservation coordination. The only structured oncofertility service in Nepal.

🔭

Laparoscopic Gynaecologic Oncology

Advanced laparoscopy training from Germany (GNESOG programme) — rare for a Nepali gynaecological oncologist. Laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, staging, lymph node dissection and complex pelvic procedures with faster recovery and less surgical trauma.

🟣

Radical Hysterectomy for Cervical Cancer

Open and laparoscopic radical hysterectomy (Wertheim’s) with pelvic lymph node dissection. Nerve-sparing approaches where feasible to preserve bladder and bowel function. Coordinated with chemo-radiation for locally advanced disease.

🟡

Ovarian Cancer Surgery & Staging

Comprehensive staging surgery for early ovarian cancer. Debulking surgery (optimal cytoreduction) for advanced disease. Interval debulking after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Coordination with the oncology team for NACT-IDS pathways.

🧪

HIPEC for Peritoneal Ovarian Cancer

Part of KCC’s HIPEC team for advanced ovarian and peritoneal cancers. Cytoreductive surgery combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy — the only programme of its kind in Nepal. Avoids the need to travel to India for this procedure.

📌

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy

Sentinel node detection for endometrial and cervical cancer — identifying whether cancer has spread to lymph nodes with minimal surgical morbidity, avoiding full lymphadenectomy in appropriate cases.

🚨

Salvage Surgery for Recurrent Disease

Extended pelvic resections and exenterations for recurrent cervical and gynaecological cancers. Complex re-operative pelvic surgery. Coordinated second-line chemotherapy planning through the KCC Tumour Board.

🔍

Cervical Precancer & Screening

Colposcopy, LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision) for cervical precancer, Pap smear and HPV testing. Prophylactic vaccination counselling. Population-level cervical screening awareness — Dr. Kayastha is involved in community outreach programmes across Nepal.

Training & Credentials
Core Fellowship

Fellowship — Gynaecologic Oncology

AGOI — Association of Gynecologic Oncologists of India

India’s premier dedicated fellowship for gynaecological cancer surgery — covering radical surgery, laparoscopic oncology, HIPEC, and oncofertility. Only a small number of Nepali gynaecologists hold this qualification.

Postgraduate Degree

MS — Obstetrics & Gynaecology

TUTH, Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University

Nepal’s most competitive OBG residency programme — the foundation for his subsequent specialist cancer surgery training.

International Training

Advanced Laparoscopy Training

Germany — GNESOG Programme

One of the first Nepali gynaecologists to complete this fellowship. Laparoscopic surgical skills developed in a European training environment, brought back to KCC.

Research & Recognition

International Conference Presentations & Awards

National & International Platforms

Presented papers and abstracts at international gynae oncology conferences. Recipient of awards for scientific contribution to gynaecological cancer surgery in Nepal. Published in peer-reviewed journals.

From patients

I was 28 when I was diagnosed with early cervical cancer. The first thing Dr. Kayastha told me was that we would try to preserve my ability to have children. Two years later, I am cancer-free and I still have that possibility. I cannot put into words what that means.

Patient, Early Cervical Cancer
Fertility-sparing surgery, KCC

My advanced ovarian cancer had spread to the abdominal lining. I was told in India I needed HIPEC. Dr. Kayastha’s team performed the same surgery here in Nepal. The care was thorough and I did not have to leave my family behind.

Gynaecological cancer care —
with fertility in mind.

A cancer diagnosis should not automatically mean giving up the possibility of children. Dr. Kayastha’s oncofertility expertise means every young woman is offered a proper conversation about her options — before, during, and after treatment. This is what comprehensive gynae cancer care looks like.
