Research Ethics

Institutional Review Committee (IRC)

Every research study at Kathmandu Cancer Center is first reviewed by this committee. Our job is simple: make sure no patient is ever put at risk, pressured, or left uninformed.

About the IRC

What the committee does

Research helps us find better ways to treat cancer. But research involves real people, and real people must be protected. The Institutional Review Committee of KCC (IRC-KCC) looks at each study before it starts and keeps watching while it runs.

The committee follows national and international ethical guidelines for medical research. We work closely with our Department of Research and Academics and with the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC).

  • We read every proposal and decide whether it is safe and fair to patients.
  • We check that consent is truly informed, in a language the patient understands.
  • We help our doctors and students do research the right way.
For patients and families

If you are asked to join a research study

Sometimes a doctor may ask if you would like to take part in a study. This is always your choice. Please know these things:

  • You can say no. Your treatment at KCC will be exactly the same.
  • You can change your mind. You may leave a study at any time, without giving a reason.
  • You will be told everything first. What the study is, what could go wrong, and what may help. Ask as many questions as you need, and bring your family along.
  • Your privacy is protected. Your name and reports are never shared publicly.
  • Any worry can be raised. If something feels wrong, tell your doctor or contact the IRC below.
For researchers

How to get ethical approval

Notice from NHRC: the Integrated Research Ethics Review Platform (IRERP) is now the official system for submitting new research proposals that need ethical review. New proposals are no longer accepted through the old ERB system.

  1. Prepare your proposal. Keep your study protocol and patient consent form ready.
  2. Submit on IRERP. All new proposals go through the NHRC portal.
  3. Committee review. Reviewers read your proposal and may ask you to clarify or change something.
  4. Decision. Begin your study only after you have written approval.

Not sure how this applies to your study at KCC? Contact us and we will guide you.
